Welcome to the Orchard at Altapass

Celebrating one hundred years! The Historic Orchard at Altapass is a 100-year-old apple orchard turned Appalachian Cultural Center celebrating the people, music, art, and natural beauty of the Blue Ridge mountains in North Carolina. Built by the Clinchfield Railroad in 1908, the Orchard sits right on the Parkway providing some of the most amazing scenery on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Family fun by the bushels! While you tap your toes to our authentic mountain music, our talented staff serve up our fabulous ice cream and our famous Orchard fudge, made fresh by Miss Charlotte right in the Orchard shop. Children can watch the entire lifecycle of Monarch Butterflies at our Butterfly Conservation Center as well as thousands of our busy tree pollinators in the the Orchard beehive. SOMETHING NEW! Join a delightful group of bird watchers at the Parkway Loops Overlook above The Orchard. This is one of the finest birding areas in the state. See the Calendar for August and September for details.

Shop 'til you drop or relax on an Orchard hayride! After a trip around the dance floor, take a look at our local mountain art, jams, jellies, sauces, sweets, gifts, and more! Individuals, families, and large or small tour groups are all invited to take Orchard hayrides where you gaze out at the picture-perfect views while listening to stories that have shaped our area for centuries. Oh, and don't forget the apples!
